Abramovich Sanctions £62.3m Bid For Andrea Belotti

With Michy Batshuayi injured and out for a while, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte only has Alvaro Morata to call upon up front. Therefore Chelsea need to sign another striker, and have the opportunity to do just that with the January transfer window opening in less than six weeks.

And it seems the Blues have already started moves to ensure Conte has another striker to call upon apart from Michy Batshuayi and Alvaro Morata with the news they have made a bid of €70 million (£62.3m) (also reported by TeamTalk) for long-term target Andrea Belotti. This is one signing many Chelsea fans would be happy to see happen.

If the report of the bid is true, it means Chelsea are possibly trying to sign him this winter rather than waiting to sign him in the summer transfer window. Which makes sense especially considering the options available to Chelsea at the moment.

The 23-year-old Italian was linked with a move to Arsenal and Chelsea last summer but nothing happened, most likely due to the asking price set by Torino. Belotti reportedly has a release clause of €100 million, which must have frustrated the clubs interested in trying to sign him last summer.

However with Chelsea bidding €70 million (£62.3m), if true, then the Premier League champions must have received encouragement from somewhere. The Blues must think they have a chance of signing him for less than his release clause, hence the fee they have bid. However, the West London club will have competition from Real Madrid for the signature of the 23-year-old.

With Karim Benzema ageing, Real Madrid are likely to be in the market for the signing of another striker, and with him not being cup-tied in the Champions League, they may see him as a better option to Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Robert Lewandowski this season, who are their other targets.

Where Real Madrid may edge out Chelsea is in the area of game time. At Chelsea, Belotti would be competing with Alvaro Morata, while at Madrid he would have the ageing Benzema to compete with, and could feel he has a better chance of playing more regularly at the Spanish giants than Chelsea.

Aside from that, it is almost impossible for any player that knows he will play regularly to reject Real Madrid. If it is true that Madrid really want him, I personally can’t see him rejecting them for Chelsea.

  1. Belotti certainly will be a wonderful signing. My fear is that if Real Madrid is interested, Chelsea may not succeed cos the Blues Management is slow, sluggish and too frugal in pricing of players. Recall how Lukaku was missed out. The Blues wake up this time from sleep!
