With reports claiming Michy Batshuayi is injured and possibly out of action for a couple of weeks, Chelsea only have one fit striker for this weekend’s clash.
The Belgian has been below par for the Blues since his summer signing from Marseille so his supposed absence will hardly upset the Chelsea faithful. Having said that, for a side hoping to win the title, one striker available is not ideal.
The West London club have managed to get by in recent years with Diego Costa as the leading frontman but the Premier League is getting tougher and tougher.
Manchester City have Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus in attack and can also rely on goals from midfield via the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, and Kevin De Bruyne.
Manchester United have Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and the soon to return Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Even Arsenal have Alexandre Lacazette, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud to call upon up front.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have just Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi – and the Belgian is simply not good enough.
This is why it is not a surprise to see Chelsea being linked with a host of strikers.
The Blues have, in the last couple of weeks, been linked with the signing of Ciro Immobile from Lazio.
The former Dortmund star has been one of the best players in this season’s Serie A and is currently the league’s top scorer top scorer with 14 goals and six assists
Very impressive stats for someone who is playing in a competitive and defensive league such as the Italian premier division is!
Unfortunately for Chelsea, it appears they will have serious competition for the signature of the Italian and Lazio may also be unwilling to sell.
It is for this reason that Antonio Conte and the Chelsea management team have been working behind the scenes on a backup option.
If media reports are correct then Conte is plotting a move for Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi who has been Serie A’s best striker in the last two to three years.
Icardi was last summer linked with a move to the Premier League with Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal all linked with his signing but the forward chose to remain in Serie A.
The Blues now reportedly believe they can sign him in January but may have to pay as much as £100 million for the Argentinian. The sale of Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid means Chelsea not only have a space to fill in their squad but also some funds which they can spend on someone like Icardi or Immobile.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, Real Madrid are also thought to be interested in acquiring the striker which means a bidding war could ensue between the two parties and his price tag rise.
Is Icardi worth £100million?
Gonzalo Higuain was sold by Napoli to Juventus for similar money; Lukaku went to Manchester United from Everton for about £75 million. Therefore, in the current climate, I would say that he is worth it. The forward has scored a total of 49 goals and created 14 assists in just 79 starts which is quite incredible.
