Champions League Predictions and Preview Group Stage 6 for Tuesday

UEFA Champions League Predictions

This Tuesday and Wednesday feature the final games in the Champions League group stages. The first and second place teams will advance to the knockout round of 16 while third place teams get entered into the Europa League and fourth place teams go home.

Tuesday’s matches in Groups A, B, C, and D feature several teams battling it out for top spot including Manchester United and Shakhtar Donetsk, while Manchester City has a distant chance of overtaking Bayern Munich.

There are even more teams that are looking to go through to the knockout round or head into Europa League. These include Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, Galatasaray, FC Copenhagen, Olympiakos and Benfica,

In making my predictions for Champions League matches I do not take into account how the team has been playing in their domestic leagues. This is due to the difference in play in the competition and how often teams ignore their league form and play better, or worse, in Champions League matches. Too often the tactics and play in continental competition is so much different.

Tuesday’s Champions League Matches:

Group A: Shakhtar Donetsk travel to Old Trafford needing a win to top the group while Manchester United need just a draw to go through as winners. Bayer Levekusen need to win their match against Real Sociedad and hope that Shakhtar either lose or draw for them to go through to the knockout stage. They could also go through with a draw and a Shakhtar loss, provided they score enough to make up the goal difference. My prediction is for both a Manchester United and a Bayer Leverkusen win for both teams to go through to the round of 16.

Group B:  Real Madrid can relax in round 6 of the group stage as they travel to FC Copenhagen. Real are already through as group winners while Copenhagen still have a chance to make the Europa League. Juventus is currently in second place with six points and go to Galatasaray who are in third with four points. Juventus need only a draw to go through in second while Galatasaray need to win. I’m predicting an FC Copenhagen draw against Real Madrid and a Juventus v Galatasaray draw to put Juventus through to the next round while Galatasaray get the Europa League place.

Group C: Paris Saint Germain has already won the group and can rest players, which could give Benfica a chance to get a result. Benfica will be relying on the result from Olympiakos v Anderlecht match to see if they qualify for the knockout round or end up in the Europa League. Olympiakos need only to win and they will take second place. My prediction is for a draw between Benfica and PSG while Olympiakos win to see them go through to the round of 16

Group D:  Bayern Munich and Manchester City face off in the match of the round.  Both teams are through to the next round, but if Manchester City can pull off a big enough win, they could win the group. The chances of these are fairly slim though with FC Bayern holding a +13 goal difference compared to City’s +7. CSKA Moscow need only to draw, or not lose by more than three, to go into the Europa League. I’m predicting a Bayern Munich win along with a Viktoria Plzen win. They haven’t been that great, but showed some signs of fight in the last round against Man City. It won’t be enough to see them progress into the Europa League, but enough to give them a win in the group.
