2012-13 Manchester United Season Highlights Review

Manchester United Season Review 2012/2013

Manchester United’s 2012-13 Season was one of many highlights mixed in with frustration. The season did not start out the way they expected with a 1-0 loss to Everton. They were able to build on this and did finish the season as Premier League Champions, claiming their 13th EPL title and 20th English League title.

Along the way they had disappointing runs in their cup competitions being knocked out of both the Capital One Cup and FA Cup in the Quarterfinals by Chelsea. They also controversially lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 after being robbed by the referee.

United’s season could definitely be summed up in a tale of two halves. The first half of the season saw them winning matches by sheer will of scoring power. Their aim seemed to be to score more goals than their opponent. In the second half of the season they worked much harder on developing their defensive solidity at the back. Through the first 19 games played they scored 50 and allowed 28 goals while amassing 49 points with a 16-1-3 record. They finished the season with 89 points after a record of 28-5-5 and a goal difference of 43. United scored 86 goals and allowed 43 on the season as they finished at the top of the Premier League Table.

The Premier League season ended with some bittersweet moments. Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement, along with Paul Scholes, and should go down in history as the greatest manager in sports. Wayne Rooney is continuing to talk about wanting to leave the club while David Moyes is set to come in as the next Manchester United manager.

Robin van Persie was certainly the buy of the season. His goals were what carried the team for large parts of the season. He finished as the Premier League golden boot winner with 26 goals, but he was also able to contribute 15 assists. Van Persie averaged 0.68 goals per game.

In addition to van Persie was the emergence of David de Gea as Manchester United’s goalkeeper of the future. He finished the season with 119 saves (average of 4.25 saves per game) and 11 clean sheets in 28 appearances. Rafael and Michael Carrick were two more standouts for the season as well. Carrick, van Persie and De Gea all were voted into the PFA Team of the Year for their contributions.

While there were certainly some disappointing moments for United this season, it was a successful Premier League campaign and one that they will hope to continue to build on for next season.
